Introduction...County Seat

Christian County covers approximately 564 square miles in Southwest Missouri and is bordered by Greene, Lawrence, Stone, Taney, Douglas and Webster Counties. Though Christian County is the fastest growing county in the State of Missouri and is considered part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (Greene, Christian, Dallas, Polk and Webster Counties), the southern part of the County is predominantly rural in character.

The vast majority of the County is unincorporated (555.6 square miles). Incorporated communities include the Village of Saddlebrooke and the cities of Billings, Clever, Fremont Hills, Highlandville, Nixa, Ozark, and Sparta. Of these cities, Nixa and Ozark are the largest with Census 2000 populations of 18,829and 18,095 respectively. Saddlebrooke, which incorporated in 2003, is the smallest community with an estimated population of 15.

Judicial BuildingChristian County has experienced continuous and rapid growth since the 1970s, far outpacing the rate of growth for  the State of Missouri and the United States. The County’s rate of growth has been explosive since 1990, with  population increasing from 54,285 in 2000 to 77,422 in 2010, a 42.6 percent rate of growth. Migration  overwhelmingly accounts for the County’s rapid increase in population. During the 1990s, natural increase  (births- deaths)accounted for an increase of 3,493 persons or only 16 percent of the total population increase of 21,641 persons.

Light Bulb Exchange Opportunity!

The Christian County Resource Management Department is pleased to announce a light bulb exchange program beginning Thursday October 18, 2012. Christian County residents are encouraged to bring in up to 4 used incandescent bulbs to exchange for 4 new 60 watt equivalent compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. Quantities are limited. The exchange will take place at the County Planning and Zoning office located at 202 W. Elm St. in Ozark during regular business hours, M-F 8:00-4:30

The department will be also providing information regarding the proper handling and disposal of CFL bulbs as well as other information related to energy efficiency.

In the event residents do not have 4 used bulbs to exchange, they may substitute canned goods for up to three used bulbs. The food collected as part of this program will be donated to a local charity.

This program was made possible through the utilization of remaining ARRA grant funding.

Important Change to Mark Twain National Forest ATV permits

In prior years these permits could be purchased at Kay’s Country Store in Chadwick. Statutes only allow ATV permits to be sold by county or state entities. So now, these permits can only be purchased in the Christian County Clerk’s office.

Mark Twain National Forest ATV permits are $15.00.
